Crotch Island, ME
Quarried from the historic Crotch Island off Maine's rugged coast, Deer Isle® Granite stands as a testament to American craftsmanship and natural beauty. This distinguished stone captivates with its unique blend of lavender, buff, and gray tones, complemented by sparkling black mica flecks that catch the light just right. Its impressive compressive strength of 184.55 MPa makes it a powerhouse in durability, while its versatile aesthetic has earned it a place in iconic American landmarks, including Rockefeller Center and the Kennedy Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
Tony’s first and favorite quarry. Tony purchased the quarry in 1979 in order to use the stone to match an existing job in New York City. Tony saved this true American stone from erasure as the quarry had been dormant for many years. The Deer Isle® quarry produced the granite used for the Kennedy Memorial in Arlington, VA, the Brooklyn Bridge, the paving around the White House, the Rockefeller fountain bowl, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and countless state and federal courthouses throughout New England, DC, NYC, and Boston. It is nearly impossible to walk 50 feet in Boston, Manhattan, or Washington D.C. without seeing Deer Isle®.
Deer Isle® is one of the most historically significant stones in our nation’s architectural history. The quarry is located on Crotch Island (named in the 1800s). The story goes that when immigrants arrived to Ellis Island and were asked what work they could do, if they answered anything to do with stone or granite they (and their families) were offered work at this quarry and if accepted, boarded onto another boat that took them to Crotch Island. At its peak in the 1800s the island had its own school house, general store, and more. The granite was quarried and fabricated on the island in its own fabrication shop; then loaded directly onto ships for transport to Boston, NYC, and DC.
Whether gracing a modern kitchen countertop or adding timeless elegance to architectural facades, this coarse-grained granite delivers the perfect combination of durability and sophisticated charm. Available in polished, honed, leathered, or bush-hammered finishes, Deer Isle Granite transforms any space with its distinctive coastal Maine character and proven legacy of excellence.
